The lifestyle pill turns one!
Looking back whilst I was making some changes to my blog, I realised it was a year today that I uploaded my first blog post!
I didn’t really know what to expect when I started The Lifestyle Pill. I had never blogged before. I had a vision of sharing evidence-based lifestyle practices which have the potential to transform a person’s health and happiness. I wanted to communicate this information in an accessible manner. Alongside this I hoped to share resources such as apps, books and websites which I found useful in this endeavour or inspired me. I also wanted to use it as a purpose to explore a hobby of mine more, creating recipes.
Being completely honest, creating The Lifestyle Pill was also a way to keep me engaged, inspired and passionate about my purpose and career path. I started it when heading back into hospital jobs for a year as part of my GP training. I had really enjoyed being part of a local, rural, GP practice, but hospital medicine has never really been ‘me’. Creating this platform provided me with a vision and a purpose and made me so much happier because of it. It also gave me the drive to delve deeper into the field of lifestyle medicine and the research behind it, to learn more, and then share this information. The positive feedback I get from you guys is a real highlight from doing this blog.
I have definitely grown alongside The Lifestyle Pill over the past year. I’ve learnt so much along the way, from how to set up my own website to connecting with people on social media. The latter has to be my favourite part of having started this whole thing. Connecting with like-minded people with similar passions has filled me with such joy, excitement and enthusiasm for continuing this journey I have started.
Over the year I have found podcasts and am in my 47th week of posting my ‘podcast of the week’! This is where I share my favourite podcast episode I’ve listened to in the hope others can enjoy it as much as I did. I keep a record of all these reviews on my blog, so check them out here (and save you scrolling on Instagram!).
Whilst recipes haven’t been so prolific, I have started really enjoying creating them again and hope to add to the small selection I already have on the blog.
I’ve also become passionate about yoga. It is absolutely one of my main stress management strategies, but it brings me so much more than this. I find my flow state so often during my own practice which gives me great joy. It is also a humbler and teaches me delayed gratification; such as when working towards a posture, building upon tiny improvements until one day, you nail it!
I started spending just 10-15 minutes first thing in the morning on my yoga mat now, every day before work. It wakes me up so well, and in a calm state ready to face the day with a smile and a clear mind. I really recommend it compared to opening your eyes and staring into your phone screen with all the notifications that go with it. If you haven’t tried you get, I really recommend you give it a go. If you don’t know where to start, check out my blog on my favourite yoga YouTube channels. Finding the right teacher for you is key.
More recently I have become the Regional Director for the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine for Hampshire and Dorset. I am very excited about this new role. It allows me to connect with local health professionals who share my passion, and other Directors across the country. As a small and growing organisation I am excited to work together in creating a society which fulfils its great potential.
The Lifestyle Pill has undergone a recent change! It has moved to https://thelifestylepill.org/! I hope this makes it more accessible, compared to the long-winded domain it was for the last year. Please do check it out and let me know what you think.
I want to finish off by saying thank you to all my family and friends who have been so incredibly supportive of my new side-hustle. From listening to me wittering on about something new I’ve read, to sharing posts they think others would find valuable, I truly value the encouragement. Most of all I want to thank Stu, my boyfriend, who so wonderfully shares my passion for ways we can improve our lifestyle for health and happiness, providing me with a springboard to bounce ideas off, shares things he’s learnt that I might find interesting with me, and allows me to give time to The Lifestyle Pill on weekends and evenings without making me feel guilt. I really couldn’t have done it without the support.
Lastly, I want to thank you, whoever you are, spending you time reading what I have to say and connecting with me. I know it’s not perfect, and I’ve definitely made mistakes along the way, but your interaction with this platform has allowed me to create something I am proud and passionate about.
Here’s to more years to come!
